How to Start a Fire with Steel Wool and a 9V Battery
Materials Needed:
- Coarse steel wool (available on our website)
- 9V battery, (you can use other items to light the steel wool)
- Kindling (dry leaves, small sticks, or paper)
- Firewood

Step-by-Step Guide:
Prepare Your Fire Site: Clear a safe area for your fire. Remove any flammable materials around the site to prevent accidental spreading. Ideally find a place near a water source, but not in a damp area.
Gather Your Materials: Collect enough kindling and firewood to sustain the fire once it starts. This can include leaves and small twigs.
Arrange the Kindling: Place your kindling in a small pile, forming a nest shape. This will help the fire catch more easily.
Prepare the Steel Wool: Take a small piece of coarse steel wool and spread it out a bit to increase its surface area.
Ignite the Steel Wool: Touch the terminals of the 9V battery to the steel wool. The electric current will cause the steel wool to ignite almost instantly.
Transfer the Flame: Quickly place the burning steel wool into the kindling nest. Gently blow on the embers to encourage the fire to spread to the kindling.
Add Firewood: Once the kindling is burning well, start adding larger pieces of firewood to build up your fire.
Safety Tip:
Always have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby when starting a fire, especially when using unconventional methods. Handle the steel wool with caution, do not place near anything that is at risk of lighting it when carrying the steel wool about.
Other Easy Methods to Start a Fire
